Why We Created the Gifted Youth USA Flute Competition

When I was young, preparing for a competition was a major part of our musical life. We would practice for months with intense focus—preparing our pieces with care, polishing every note, and learning how to handle pressure. We’d travel to new cities, perform for world-renowned musicians, and gain skills that served us not only as musicians, but in every extreme situation life could throw our way.
I won some. I lost some. But every competition left me stronger.
Today, things feel different.
Too often, competitions are either superficial fundraisers or shaped to be “fair” in name only—where flutists are judged alongside completely different instruments, styles, and levels of experience. And don’t get me started on online competitions—where you don’t even know who you’re playing against, let alone who’s listening.
That’s why we created the Gifted Youth USA Flute Competition.
To bring back live, fair, elite-level competition.
To make sure flutists are judged by flutists, based on skill, artistry, and presence.
To create a space where real talent is recognized, nurtured, and celebrated.
To give students a chance to win meaningful prizes—like $1,000 and the opportunity to perform a full concerto with orchestra.
This competition is for those who are ready to rise.
It’s for teachers who want their students taken seriously.
It’s for flutists who deserve to be heard—clearly and fairly.
If this resonates with you, we invite you to be part of it.
Support this mission. Donate. Spread the word. Help us build something real.
