A Night of Music, Memories, and Connection: Taraf de Akácfa at Orange Music Studio

Reflecting on the recent concert featuring Taraf de Akácfa, I am filled with warmth and gratitude. The event was a beautiful tapestry of music, memories, and meaningful connections.

It was heartening to reconnect with old friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen in years, and to welcome new faces—individuals drawn by their deep ties to the rich traditions of Eastern European and Balkan folk music. Notably, many were connected personally to the talented musicians themselves.

A particularly touching moment was the story of Ion, the cimbalom player. He performed on a cimbalom graciously loaned by a woman whose father had crafted this and several other such instruments. For her, witnessing the instrument—once a cherished piece of home décor—come alive under Ion’s skilled hands was profoundly moving. It was as if the cimbalom began to narrate tales of her ancestors, bridging past and present through its resonant melodies.

The cimbalom itself is a traditional Eastern European instrument, resembling a hammered dulcimer, and is integral to Romanian folk music. Its rich, vibrant tones added depth to the evening’s performances, evoking emotions that words alone could not convey.

Dmitriy, the accordionist, charmed us all with his cherubic demeanor and infectious smile. His performance transported me back to my own childhood, evoking cherished memories of my grandfather playing the accordion. The familiar strains and heartfelt tunes created a nostalgic ambiance that resonated with many in the audience.

And then, of course, there was Lulu, our beloved violinist, whose energy and passion are undeniably the heartbeat of Taraf de Akácfa. Her dynamic presence and masterful playing captivated everyone, weaving a musical narrative that was both exhilarating and deeply moving.

The ensemble treated us to a variety of pieces, including several doina—a traditional Romanian musical style characterized by its free-form, improvisational nature. Often likened to the blues, the doina is deeply expressive, conveying profound emotion and longing. Its inclusion in the program added an authentic touch, allowing the audience to experience the soulful essence of Romanian folk music.

One of my most cherished memories from that night is a candid snippet captured by the security cameras: my husband and I sharing a spontaneous dance to those ancient, vigorous tunes. In that moment, the music transcended time, connecting us to a lineage of traditions and shared human experiences.

The concert was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of culture, connection, and the enduring power of music to unite us all.
