About the event
Once, when struggling to describe his instrumental work, Tchaikovsky cited poet Heinrich Heine, who said: “Where words leave off, music begins.” In art songs, text has always played a key role in musical storytelling. But what about instrumental music? How can musicians “say something” through their playing?
This one-hour interactive presentation led by flutist Annie Wu is designed for musicians of all levels who want to become more expressive performers. Attendees will explore:
🎭 The language of other art forms – how text and storytelling inspire music.
🎼 Text-based music – understanding how composers use words to shape sound.
👐 Gestural thinking & body language – using movement to enhance expression.
Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, young musicians will leave with a deeper understanding of how language, movement, and emotion shape musical interpretation.
